EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON CHILEAN ANTARCTICA, ITS ADAPTATION AND RESILIENCE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Climate change is a phenomenon that must be understood in all its dimensions, that is, to understand that it is a normal cycle of the earth that generates climate variability, but it is also a problem that arises as a result of industrialization caused by man. The generation of greenhouse gases has increased, causing the planet’s surface to warm, thereby causing the cyclical variability of the climate to transform into extreme climatic manifestations that affect the human being, biodiversity and ecosystems, within the which is the Antarctic continent. This barren wasteland that seems lifeless, accumulates more than 80% of the fresh water reserves which enter the ocean in huge quantities as a result of the over-temperature of the globe, causing changes to the marine fauna, causing the Antarctic winds to generate remote connections. with the mainland causing heavy rains or prolonged droughts. On the other hand, the State of Chile maintains its interest and claims of sovereignty over a sector of Antarctica and is an active participant in matters of research and collaboration through the National Antarctic Institute, and that during 2017 it managed to create a National Plan of Climate change. However, the numbers are alarming and it is necessary to understand the effect of climate change on Antarctica and how to face this global situation, which, if no action is taken promptly, could cause a strong setback on attempts to leave poverty behind and the development of the nation.
